Montgomery County Public Schools studies school closures

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has initiated a study to evaluate the potential closure and consolidation of elementary and middle schools due to declining enrollment. The district reports that student numbers have decreased by approximately 9,200 since the 2019-2020 school year, with a further decline of 6,300 students projected by the 2031 school year.

The review will assess school organization, student locations, and building usage. Decision-making criteria will include enrollment trends, building age and condition, transportation, racial composition, and the ability to maintain diverse staffing and programs. Officials noted that while some areas face overcrowding, others have excess capacity due to declining birth rates and demographic shifts.

Acting Chief Operations Officer Andrea Swiatocha stated there are no predetermined targets for the number of closures. The district aims to balance efficiency with the need to maintain capacity for potential future increases in international enrollment.

Community engagement will include two rounds of virtual and in-person sessions between October 2026 and December 2026, alongside a survey. Superintendent Thomas Taylor is expected to release recommendations on February 4, 2027, with the Board of Education scheduled to make a final decision on April 15, 2027.
