Montoyas discuss Formula 1 prospects and racing costs

Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya and his son, current Formula 2 racer Sebastián Montoya, recently discussed the financial and logistical challenges of professional motorsport at the Tocancipá Autodrome.

Sebastián Montoya highlighted the significant economic disparities in Formula 2, noting that some competitors utilize budgets of nearly US$5 million per season to fund private testing, specialized personnel, simulators, and engineers. While Sebastián receives support from Colombian companies, he acknowledged the advantage held by drivers with larger financial backing.

Regarding the future of racing in Colombia, Juan Pablo Montoya expressed skepticism about the immediate possibility of hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix, suggesting the window for such an event may have closed. He noted that the most viable path for Colombia to return to the F1 grid would be through a driver like his son achieving the category with substantial, organized institutional support, similar to the model seen with Argentina’s Franco Colapinto.
