Tour Montparnasse renovation project abandoned after co-owner vote

The ambitious €800 million renovation project for the Tour Montparnasse in Paris has been halted following a vote by co-owners. During a general assembly, a resolution to initiate the first phase of work—including asbestos removal, clearing, and partial facade removal—was rejected by more than 76% of the co-owners.

This decision effectively stalls the long-term plan to transform the 209-meter skyscraper into a modern glass tower featuring terraced gardens, a hotel, shops, and a rooftop agricultural greenhouse. The rejection is particularly significant as the assembly was the final opportunity to begin work before the current building permit expires at the end of November.

The collapse of the project follows internal conflicts and rising costs. LFPI, the primary co-owner, had previously expressed opposition due to budget increases and disputes over surface area exchanges. Other major stakeholders, including MGEN and Axa, also joined the opposition. While the large-scale metamorphosis is currently abandoned, a new syndical council has been formed with the goal of reworking a renovation plan and submitting a new permit application.
