Montreal and La Tuque redesign sidewalks to boost intersection safety

In Montreal, long sidewalk extensions were built at several intersections along the Henri‑Bourassa corridor. According to city media relations officer Hugo Bourgoin, the protrusions "realign vehicles at about 90 degrees to favor good visibility for a right turn." The extensions also reserve space for future BIXI bike‑share stations, though installation dates are pending. The design follows recommendations from the North American Cities and Transit Agencies (NACTO).

In La Tuque, a major works program at the corner of boulevard Ducharme and rue Saint‑Maurice reconfigures a hazardous diagonal crossing used by cyclists and ATV riders. Project engineer Maxime Roy explained that two shorter crossings will be created—one for pedestrians and cyclists, another for off‑road vehicles—along with a flashing signal that cyclists can activate. Additional upgrades include new drainage chambers, sewer and water‑line replacements, and improved access for the nearby La Tuque High School. Both projects aim to enhance safety and mobility for residents.
