Montreal announces new metro security and service measures

The City of Montreal and the STM have announced a series of new measures to improve safety and service within the metro network. The initiative includes a $6.5-million investment to hire more special constables, with plans to add more than 50 personnel by the end of 2027. Additionally, $3 million will be allocated to enhance electronic surveillance.

To address diverse passenger needs, the city is implementing a multi-faceted response strategy. This includes increased collaboration with the Montreal police and the introduction of social workers to handle specific crises, such as homelessness. Starting this fall, St. John Ambulance will provide social worker teams to operate throughout the year.

While transit rights advocates have welcomed the announcement, they noted that significant work remains to address the safety concerns of passengers, citing that many riders still report feeling unsafe using the system.
