Montreal Canadiens monitor Devils' centre Nico Hischier as a potential acquisition

Nico Hischier, the New Jersey Devils’ captain, is in the final year of his seven‑year contract that runs through the 2026‑27 season. While the Devils and Hischier’s agent have begun informal extension talks, no firm agreement has been reached.

According to league sources, the Montreal Canadiens are closely tracking the situation and view Hischier as an ideal fit for their roster. Insider Pierre LeBrun said the Canadiens would be willing to pay a significant price and that the player’s left‑handed style matches well with star centre Nick Suzuki. The Canadiens are also linked to other centres such as Detroit’s Dylan Larkin, but Hischier is considered the preferred target.

Hischier finished the most recent season with 28 goals and 66 points in all 82 games, building a reputation as a premier two‑way centre since being selected first overall in the 2017 NHL Draft. Any trade remains speculative at this stage, with the Devils still evaluating extension options and other clubs monitoring his availability.
