Montreal Canadiens poised well for upcoming NHL expansion draft

Analysts say the Montreal Canadiens are in a strong position for the NHL’s anticipated expansion draft. Pierre McGuire, speaking on The Sick Podcast, noted that the Habs can protect a core of seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender, or alternatively eight skaters and one goalie, allowing them to shield most of their key talent.

The team’s prospect pool includes forwards Kaiden Guhle, Jacob Fowler, David Reinbacher and Oliver Kapanen, as well as defenseman Mike Matheson, who would need to waive his no‑trade clause to be exposed. In goal, young prospects Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler are considered attractive options for a new franchise. McGuire also mentioned the possibility of a double expansion, which could see two players leave the organization, and highlighted that past expansion teams have accepted trade compensation to avoid selecting specific players.

Overall, the Canadiens would likely lose only a player outside their core roster, minimizing the impact on the club’s competitive outlook.
