Montreal Canadiens sign defenseman Maksymilian Szuber to one-year deal

The Montreal Canadiens announced a one‑year, two‑way contract with restricted‑free‑agent defenseman Maksymilian Szuber. The 23‑year‑old, a Poland native who represents Germany internationally, was acquired from the Utah Mammoth in June in exchange for forward Joshua Roy. The deal carries an $850,000 NHL cap hit, a $135,000 salary at the AHL level and a guaranteed minimum of $175,000 regardless of where he plays in the 2026‑27 season. Szuber, who made a single NHL appearance with the Arizona Coyotes in 2022‑23, spent the previous season with the AHL’s Laval Rocket and is expected to start the year in Laval, remaining eligible for recall if injuries arise. He will need to clear waivers this fall, as this is his first year of waiver eligibility. With Szuber signed, the Canadiens still have three restricted free agents to address: forward Zach Bolduc, defenseman Arber Xhekaj and forward Sasha Pastujov.
