Montreal Canadiens eye Russian winger Kirill Marchenko in trade talks

The Montreal Canadiens, fresh from an Eastern Conference final run and holding the 28th overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft, are actively exploring options to add scoring depth. General manager Kent Hughes has been linked to Russian winger Kirill Marchenko of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Marchenko, 25, recorded 67 points in 76 games in the 2025‑26 season and is entering the final year of a three‑year, $11.55 million contract ($3.85 million AAV). Sources say the Blue Jackets are not eager to move him but may consider offers if he signals he will not re‑sign.

Montreal’s interest comes as the team seeks to improve its forward group after injuries and a young roster. The Canadiens could use prospects and draft picks to acquire Marchenko, though the price may be high. Other clubs, including the Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators, are also monitoring the winger, while the Blue Jackets remain open to a wide array of offers. The Canadiens have also indicated they will extend qualifying offers to all restricted free agents, keeping options flexible ahead of the draft.

If a deal materialises, head coach Martin St. Louis would likely reshuffle the top six, possibly moving Alex Newhook to centre to accommodate Marchenko alongside captain Nick Suzuki and winger Ivan Demidov.
