Montreal coroner releases new findings on death of Abisay Cruz

A coroner's investigation has released new findings regarding the death of 29-year-old Abisay Cruz, who died following a Montreal Police (SPVM) intervention on March 30, 2025. The 16-page report by coroner Géhane Kamel provides new details that contrast with previous conclusions.

According to the report, Cruz was experiencing significant stress and insomnia due to the threat of deportation to Honduras and had used cocaine to manage his condition. The incident began after a 911 call was placed following Cruz allegedly throwing objects from a balcony. While the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) previously closed the file without new facts, the coroner's report introduces new information regarding the circumstances of the death.
