Montreal Girl's Memory Honored with Highway Sign in New York
Nine‑year‑old Melina Frattolin, a Montreal resident, was found dead in a marsh near Ticonderoga, New York. Her father, Luciano Frattolin, is on trial in the nearby hamlet of Elizabethtown on charges of second‑degree murder and concealment of a corpse. He has pleaded not guilty and maintains that his daughter was kidnapped while the two were returning to Montreal after a week‑long vacation.
Local resident Cruz organized a vigil after the Amber Alert and later adopted a three‑kilometre stretch of highway through the New York Department of Transportation’s Adopt‑a‑Highway program. Two highway signs bearing the Frattolin name were installed in November at each end of the stretch that runs by the marsh where the body was recovered. Under the program, adopters commit to cleaning litter on the road a few times a year for two years, with the option to renew. Cruz performed the first cleanup in the spring, assisted by several state troopers who had taken part in the original search. Town Board member Heath Towne noted that such murders are rare in the area and expects the trial, slated to conclude in August, to rekindle community emotions.
