Montreal jazz icon Oliver Jones to be honored at public funeral

A public funeral service for acclaimed jazz pianist Oliver Jones will be held this Thursday at Union United Church in Montreal’s Little Burgundy neighbourhood. Jones, who passed away on July 22 at the age of 91, began his musical journey at that same church when he was five years old.

Jones maintained an international career spanning over seven decades and was a prominent figure in the Montreal jazz scene, performing annually at the Montreal International Jazz Festival from 1981 to 1999. His achievements include receiving the Order of Canada, a SOCAN lifetime award, and a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award.

Prior to the service, the City of Montreal will host a public viewing on Wednesday at the Hall of Honour at Montreal City Hall from 1:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Due to expected large crowds, jumbo screens and limited outdoor seating will be provided at the church for the Thursday service.
