Montreal police chief Fady Dagher is addressing a major scandal involving allegations of racism, discrimination, and misconduct within a 16-member patrol unit in the Montreal-Nord neighborhood. Following an internal investigation, the unit has been disbanded.

As part of the disciplinary response, three officers have been suspended, three have been reassigned to administrative duties, and 10 others have been transferred to different units. While allegations have been submitted to the public prosecutor for review, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office stated that no case for criminal charges has been submitted regarding the specific events mentioned in June.

The scandal has reignited long-standing community concerns regarding racial profiling and police brutality in the region. Residents have pointed to historical reports and lawsuits, including the 2019 finding that Black and Indigenous people were significantly more likely to be stopped by Montreal police, as evidence of systemic issues.

In response, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) has launched a plan to rebuild community trust, which includes a new community team deployed in July and an emphasis on internal and external whistleblowing. Chief Dagher has committed to working with neighborhood stakeholders to overhaul the institutional culture.
