Montrose Pride banners return to Westheimer Road

Pride flags have returned to the Montrose neighborhood in Houston through the reactivation of the Lower Westheimer Banner District. Ten poles along Westheimer Road, spanning from Taft Street to Montrose Boulevard, now display Progress Pride flags.

The initiative follows the removal of a rainbow crosswalk at the intersection of Taft and Westheimer after a state order to remove political ideologies from streets. The banner project was spearheaded by advocates Jack Valinski and Kerry-Ann Morrison, alongside Harris County Attorney Abbie Kamin and Council Member Joe Panzarella. Houston Mayor John Whitmire provided financial support and backing for the installation.

Advocates noted that the banner district designation, which dates back to 1995, allows the neighborhood to celebrate its community spirit. The return of the flags is seen as a significant step for LGBTQ visibility in the historic district, particularly as the community prepares for LGBTQ History Month in October.
