Monviso faces climate crisis alerts regarding glaciers and water
Legambiente’s Glacier Caravan has issued three critical alerts from Monviso in Piedmont, highlighting the severe impact of the climate crisis on the region. The organization reported that the Coolidge glacier is nearly extinct and has been reclassified as a glacieret, making it no longer measurable.
Additional concerns include frequent rockfalls on the northeast wall of Monviso and the declining health of the Po river, which originates at the mountain's base. Experts noted the presence of rock glaciers in periglacial areas, which serve as vital water reservoirs that require careful management.
Vanda Bonardo, national Alps manager for Legambiente and president of Cipra Italia, emphasized the deep connection between mountain ecosystems and the plains. The campaign is calling for urgent European governance to manage mountain resources and water supplies effectively.
