Monza adopts new Territorial Government Plan amid local protests

The Monza City Council has officially adopted a new Territorial Government Plan (PGT), marking a shift from urban expansion toward the regeneration of existing areas. The plan aims to reduce land consumption by approximately 711,000 square meters and includes provisions for depaving roughly 100,000 square meters of surface area.

Key objectives of the new regulations include increasing social housing availability, with requirements for residential projects over 1,000 square meters to include between 20% and 40% subsidized housing. The adoption follows extensive debate involving 588 amendments. The document will undergo a period of public observation before receiving final reviews from the Province of Monza and Brianza and the Lombardy Region, with a final approval target set for February.

However, the plan has met local opposition. The Coordination of Monza Committees and Associations has announced a major mobilization for October 3 to protest the potential destruction of a 25,000-square-meter woodland located at the former IV Novembre barracks. Activists are calling on Mayor Paolo Pilotto to protect the site, citing the EU Nature Restoration Law.
