The September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States significantly impacted the atmosphere surrounding the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix in Monza. Originally scheduled to be a celebration following Ferrari's championship wins and Michael Schumacher's title, the event was overshadowed by the tragedy in New York and Washington.

In the paddock, the usual festive mood was replaced by sadness and anxiety regarding security and the safety of large gatherings. While Formula 1 decided to proceed with the race, Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo chose to cancel the team's planned celebrations.
