Monza police interrupt copper theft at urban cemetery

Thieves attempting to steal copper from the urban cemetery on via Foscolo in Monza were driven away by local police during the night of September 2-3. The intervention was triggered around 2:00 AM following a report from a passerby who heard noises coming from the cemetery grounds near via Salvadori.

Upon arriving at the perimeter wall near the viale Stucchi parking area, officers heard metallic sounds and observed a man's head peering over the top of the wall. The individual quickly ducked down, likely using a ladder located inside the cemetery, and managed to evade capture. Although a search of the grounds was conducted, no suspects were found, leaving open the possibility that they were still hiding within the cemetery or had escaped prior to the arrival of additional crews.

Investigators discovered the intended loot near a bus stop on via Salvadori, where nine copper plates had already been removed from the perimeter wall, bent, and prepared for transport. Other copper elements were found partially detached and damaged.
