Monza prison faces severe overcrowding and mental health crisis

A delegation from the Radical Party has reported severe overcrowding and mental health crises at the Monza prison. Following a visit on August 17, officials revealed that the facility holds 737 detainees despite having a capacity for only 413. This represents a significant surplus of inmates, with many sections utilizing triple or quadruple bunking to accommodate the population.

Of particular concern is the state of inmate mental health; the delegation reported that 311 detainees, or more than 40% of the population, suffer from serious psychiatric pathologies. The situation is further exacerbated by a chronic shortage of staff, a long-standing issue previously raised by labor unions.
