Monza signs Portuguese striker Gustavo Varela from Benfica

Italian Serie A club Monza confirmed the permanent signing of 21‑year‑old forward Gustavo Varela from Portuguese side Benfica. Varela, born in Lisbon on 30 January 2005 and also holding a Cape Verdean passport, agreed a contract running until 30 June 2030. The transfer fee was reported to be just over €3 million.

Varela arrived after a loan spell at Gil Vicente in the 2024‑25 season, where he scored six goals in 32 appearances. Earlier he had played for Benfica B, making 22 appearances with three goals and later 11 goals in 34 games in Portugal’s second division. He has also earned five caps and three goals for Portugal’s under‑21 national team. The move follows Monza’s recent acquisition of midfielder Ricardo Mangas, further bolstering the club’s attack under coach Ivan Jurić.
