Moody's Ratings: Insurers plan increased property reinsurance for 2027

A survey by Moody's Ratings indicates that more than 25% of primary insurers intend to increase their property reinsurance purchases in 2027. The survey, which included 40 rated P&C and composite insurers across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific, highlights a strong demand for property reinsurance as companies seek to mitigate tail risk.

In response to the rising frequency and severity of secondary peril events—such as wildfires, floods, and severe convective storms—insurers are increasingly targeting tail protection and aggregate cover. While most respondents expect to maintain current levels of casualty cover, the focus on property reinsurance remains a priority to manage potential catastrophe losses.
