Moon serves as strategic testing ground for NASA and China

Space agencies are increasingly looking toward the Moon as a critical staging ground for deep space exploration. NASA intends to use the lunar environment as a technical testing site to develop technologies required for future missions to Mars. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman noted that the Moon’s proximity allows for the validation of complex equipment and procedures before undertaking interplanetary journeys that could last nine months or more. Proposed projects include installing a nuclear reactor at the lunar south pole to support operations involving frozen water, oxygen, and hydrogen generation.

Simultaneously, China is developing plans to deploy robotic dogs to assist astronauts in constructing and operating its future International Lunar Research Station (ILRS). According to research published in Chinese Space Science and Technology, these quadruped robots would work alongside human crews to perform tasks such as resource extraction, maintenance, patrolling, and habitat cleaning. The Chinese model envisions a collaborative system where robots handle routine duties, including mining, collecting ice, and even assisting with plant care and meal preparation, to maximize the efficiency of human-robot cooperation on the lunar surface.
