Moonfish animated film premieres at Venice Film Festival

The black-and-white 2D-animated film ‘Moonfish’ premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 6, following a grant from Biennale College Cinema. Directed by first-time filmmaker Daniel Zvereff, the independent production features the voices of Lucy Liu and Morgan Spector.

The story follows two astronauts on a solitary mission to the moon, driven by corporate quotas required for their return home. Zvereff describes the film as an allegory for the modern human condition, exploring themes of societal disconnection despite being technologically plugged in.

Produced over nine months, the project involved animators Hoss Wheeler and Devin Grover. Liu praised the craftsmanship and tenderness of the 2D animation style, while Spector noted the challenge of portraying a character experiencing mental instability during the mission.
