Moonshot AI challenges U.S. tech leaders with Kimi K3 model

Chinese startup Moonshot AI has reportedly filed for a confidential IPO in Hong Kong as its Kimi K3 model gains significant industry attention. The 2.8-trillion parameter model, released in July, utilizes a Mixture of Experts architecture to achieve performance levels comparable to leading U.S. frontier models while maintaining much lower operational costs.

Kimi K3’s API pricing is approximately one-third of competing systems, a development that could commoditize AI services and pressure the profit margins of proprietary providers like OpenAI and Anthropic. The model’s open-weight approach allows for greater accessibility and challenges the dominance of closed-source APIs.

Moonshot AI is reportedly in early negotiations with major U.S. cloud providers, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, to host the Kimi K3 model on their platforms. The company is also seeking a pre-IPO funding round at a valuation of approximately $50 billion.
