Moonshot AI releases Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter AI model

Moonshot AI has introduced Kimi K3, a massive 2.8 trillion-parameter artificial intelligence model. The company describes it as the world’s largest open-weights model, allowing users, researchers, and businesses to download, execute, and modify the system.

Kimi K3 features a context window of one million tokens and is designed for advanced reasoning, long-term programming, and complex multi-step tasks. In third-party evaluations, the model has shown competitive performance; Arena.ai ranked it first in web interface creation tests, while Artificial Analysis noted performance comparable to advanced models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

The emergence of Kimi K3 highlights the intensifying competition between the U.S. and Chinese AI industries. While Kimi is noted for its similarities to Anthropic’s Claude, Moonshot AI disputes claims that the model was developed through heavy distillation of Claude outputs. The scale of Kimi K3 also surpasses other recent Chinese models, such as DeepSeek’s V4 Pro and Meituan’s LongCat 2.0.
