Moore and Cox clash in Maryland gubernatorial debate

Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Republican challenger Dan Cox participated in their only scheduled debate of the election cycle in Owings Mills. The candidates addressed several pressing state issues, including the impact of data centers, energy costs, and education rankings.

During the debate, Cox criticized Moore’s leadership, citing high energy bills and economic performance. Moore defended his record by pointing to decreases in teacher vacancy rates and violent crime, while attributing various state challenges to the policies of the Trump administration.

The event also featured pointed questioning regarding political history and future ambitions. Cox was questioned about his actions surrounding the January 6, 2021, Capitol events, which he dismissed as “political TMZ.” Additionally, Moore was pressed on whether he intends to serve a full second term if reelected and addressed speculation regarding a potential presidential run.
