Moose and Irish elk identified as largest deer species

The moose (Alces alces) is recognized as the largest living member of the deer family, Cervidae. These animals can weigh more than 1,500 pounds and reach heights of over seven feet at the shoulder.

Historically, the largest deer to ever exist was Megaloceros giganteus, commonly known as the Irish elk. This extinct species was characterized by massive antlers that could span up to 12 feet.
