Moose Conservation Association of Nova Scotia requests wildlife toll

The Moose Conservation Association of Nova Scotia (MCANS) has requested the implementation of a wildlife toll at the Cobequid Pass to fund critical infrastructure. This request follows the death of a bull moose on highway 104 in Weavers Mountain near Antigonish on September 29.

MCANS is proposing a $1 fee to be applied to the tolling station, with funds directed toward fencing, wildlife overpasses, and plantings in high-priority highway sections. The association identified the Weavers Mountain area as a location in urgent need of these additions to ensure habitat connectivity, noting that current fencing gaps leave animals vulnerable to vehicle collisions.

Experts from MCANS have suggested that an overpass should be placed along natural landscape routes, such as ridgelines or saddles, to connect mountain ranges and facilitate safe movement for the endangered Mainland Moose.
