Moose hunting season begins in southern Sweden
The moose hunting season begins on Thursday, October 8, in Västra Götaland and other parts of southern Sweden. There are approximately 390 hunting areas in Västra Götaland, including management areas following three-year plans and license areas where the County Administrative Board determines allocations.
Due to a decrease in the moose population, authorities are focusing on improving herd quality. Regina Fernemar, a wildlife officer at the Västra Götaland County Administrative Board, stated that the goal is to prioritize the harvesting of small, thin, and young moose while preserving older, larger, and reproductive individuals. Recommendations suggest that at least half of the harvested moose should be calves to address declining reproduction rates and calf slaughter weights.
In license areas, hunting continues until January 31, 2027. On unregistered land, only moose calves may be hunted during a limited period from October 8 to October 12. The public is advised to wear bright colors for visibility, avoid disturbing hunters, and remain cautious in traffic.
