Moose sightings reported in New York Hudson Valley

A large moose was recently filmed near the New York and Connecticut border in the Brewster area, specifically near the 684/84 exchange. This marks the first sighting in that area since 2022, contributing to an increase in moose sightings within the Hudson Valley over the past year.

While moose are native to New York, they are not commonly seen in the Hudson Valley. According to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, the state has fewer than 1,000 moose, most of which reside in the Adirondack Mountains and the Taconic Highlands. Sightings in southern regions often occur during mating season, which typically runs from late September through December.

Vehicle collisions remain a significant mortality factor for the species. Authorities note that driving conditions can become more dangerous during the late autumn months due to increased animal activity.
