Morava River fish die-off reported in Olomouc

Hundreds of kilograms of fish are dying in the Morava River and its tributaries due to critically low water flows. Fishermen and environmental officials in Olomouc report that the die-offs occur primarily during the night, when oxygen levels in the water drop as organisms consume the remaining supply.

Petr Loyka, head of the Olomouc municipal environmental department, noted that low water levels prevent the dilution of pollutants. Recent rainfall has exacerbated the issue by washing impurities and agricultural fertilizers into the river system. The Czech Fishing Union reported removing 310 kilograms of dead fish, including catfish, carp, pike, and perch, near the Tážaly hydroelectric plant.
