Moravian-Silesian cities combat illegal waste dumping with surveillance

Municipalities in the Moravian-Silesian Region are facing millions of koruna in costs due to illegal waste dumping and the emergence of black landfills. The waste often consists of construction debris, old furniture, tires, car parts, and household appliances.

To combat this, cities such as Bohumín, Opava, and Ostrava are implementing various monitoring technologies. Measures include the installation of surveillance cameras, photo traps, and physical barriers like gates to prevent unauthorized access to dumping sites. In Bohumín, authorities have already apprehended two individuals caught using a van to dump large volumes of waste in a natural area near the Heřmanice ponds.

In Opava, cameras are being used to identify and fine drivers who leave waste outside of containers. Ostrava is also utilizing its municipal camera system and photo traps to track perpetrators in various districts.
