Moravian-Silesian municipalities face budget pressures from wages and floods
Municipalities in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic have faced significant budgetary pressures during the current electoral period. Key drivers of these financial shifts include rising wages, the funding of non-pedagogical staff, increased energy and construction material costs, and damages resulting from the September 2024 floods.
In Nový Jičín, the city completed its largest investment in 20 years. Notable projects include a reconstructed outdoor pool costing 110 million CZK and a new sidewalk and water main project in the Žilina district exceeding 38 million CZK. The city also noted that lower-than-expected revenue from asset sales, such as the Hotel Praha extension, impacted the budget.
Ostrava has directed substantial funds toward infrastructure and social services. Major expenditures include 718 million CZK for water management infrastructure repairs following flood damage and 631 million CZK for the modernization of the Domov Korýtko senior facility. Additionally, a new parking garage for the Ostrava Municipal Hospital was constructed at a cost of 541 million CZK. Wage increases for city-established organizations, including the municipal police, remain a primary driver of expenditure.
