Moravian-Silesian Region sees surge in scabies cases

The Moravian-Silesian Region in the Czech Republic is experiencing a significant increase in scabies infections. According to data from the National Institute of Public Health, the region has recorded the highest number of cases in the country, with 1,882 cases reported since the beginning of the year. The city of Ostrava alone accounts for 741 of these instances.

Nationwide, scabies cases have risen sharply. There were 9,917 cases reported in the first nine months of 2026, compared to 7,542 during the same period last year and only 1,648 in 2020. In September, the Moravian-Silesian Region reported 187 cases, followed by the Plzeň Region with 148.

In Ostrava, the Kamenec nursing home has implemented preventive measures after three clients were infected. While the affected clients have recovered, the facility continues to follow hygiene protocols regarding textiles and protective equipment to prevent further spread among its nearly 200 clients and 150 employees.
