Morbidelli 850 V8: The ambitious V8 motorcycle project

In 1994, Italian industrialist and racer Giancarlo Morbidelli introduced the Morbidelli 850 V8, an ambitious luxury touring motorcycle designed to combine Formula 1-inspired power with road usability. The bike featured a compact, liquid-cooled 850cc V8 engine with a magnesium casing, inspired by Cosworth racing technology. It produced approximately 120 hp and was equipped with Brembo brakes and a five-speed transmission.

While the mechanical engineering received praise, the motorcycle faced significant challenges regarding its market appeal. Designed by Pininfarina, the aesthetic was polarizing; its rounded shapes and distinctive lighting contrasted sharply with the sharp lines of contemporary sportbikes. Additionally, the high price point—estimated at roughly $50,000—limited its commercial success.

Production was extremely limited, with only three units manufactured by 1997 alongside one prototype. These rare machines are now considered museum pieces. The Morbidelli brand has since been revived under the ownership of the Chinese Qianjiang Group, which produces more affordable touring motorcycles.
