More Than Me Academy students evicted amid property dispute
A court-ordered eviction at More Than Me Academy on Ashmun Street in Monrovia disrupted classes for hundreds of students on Tuesday. The enforcement, carried out by sheriffs and the Liberia National Police, occurred during a heavy downpour, leaving students and school belongings exposed to the rain.
The eviction is the result of a long-standing property dispute between the academy and the Montgomery family. A spokesperson for the Montgomery family, Erica Davis, stated that the family recently received a favorable ruling from the Supreme Court after a legal battle lasting more than 15 years. Davis noted that the family had previously allowed the school time to vacate but is now proceeding with enforcement.
More Than Me Academy, which was established by an NGO to serve underprivileged children, has faced significant disruption to its operations. School officials, parents, and students have called for intervention from the Liberian government and the Ministry of Education.
