More to Life foundation launched in honor of Lil Poppa

Orie Lynn Hickson has launched the More to Life foundation in Jacksonville to honor the legacy of her son, the hip-hop artist Lil Poppa, who died by suicide in February at age 25.

The foundation focuses on three primary pillars: mental health support, economic opportunity, and creative expression. The initiative stems from a vision Lil Poppa shared before his death and aims to address wellness needs within the community.

Hickson noted that while her son struggled with depression and anxiety, substance abuse played a significant role in his passing. She stated that methamphetamine was present in his system at the time, emphasizing that drugs can dangerously alter judgment and emotions for those already facing emotional battles. The foundation seeks to raise awareness about these dangers without shaming his memory.

A community mixer is scheduled for next month to introduce the foundation to local nonprofits and community organizations. The launch comes amid national concerns regarding mental health, as CDC data indicates that young Black men aged 20 to 24 face the highest suicide rates of any demographic group.
