Morelia adopts new traffic rules for heavy trucks and bus lanes

The Morelia city council is reviewing a proposal by councilwoman Verónica Zamudio Ibarra that would amend the municipal construction regulations to require developers of new residential subdivisions to install signage restricting vehicles over six tonnes, including articulated trucks, from accessing local streets. The measure aims to prevent premature pavement damage, sidewalk wear and pedestrian risk that have risen with the city’s 16.4 % population growth over the last decade.

Separately, the state secretary of Urban Development and Mobility, María Elena Huerta Moctezuma, said the ongoing Morebús road‑work project has created an exclusive lane for public‑transport buses on Avenida Madero. The adjustments prioritize bus operations while redirecting private‑vehicle traffic, ensuring that bus routes continue unchanged and that service disruptions are avoided.

Both initiatives seek to improve mobility, safety and infrastructure durability as Morelia expands.
