Morelia Culture Department Showcases Cane‑Paste Sculptures and Sends Artists to Mexico City

On July 11, 2026 the Secretaría de Cultura of Michoacán inaugurated the collective exhibition “Creaciones en pasta de caña” at the Centro Cultural Antiguo Colegio Jesuita in Pátzcuaro. The show features sculptures made with maize‑cane paste, a technique rooted in pre‑Hispanic Purépecha knowledge. The exhibition, free to the public, runs until August 19 and displays works of participants who completed a specialized workshop led by specialists Beatriz Ortega Ruiz, Shanuani Gaspar Ortega and master artisan Mario Agustín Gaspar Rodríguez, a recipient of state and national arts awards.

The following day, July 12, the Morelia Secretaría de Cultura organized a cultural showcase in Coyoacán, Mexico City, to present the city’s artistic heritage. The program includes the traditional Danza de los Viejitos performed by the municipal ballet, and musical performances by singer‑songwriter Ireri Almonte and guitarist Daniel Olmos. Events were held at the portal of the Palacio de Cortés and later at the Casa de la Cultura “Jesús Reyes Heroles.” Secretary Fátima Chávez Alcaraz said the initiative “strengthens the cultural ties between the two cities” and promotes Morelia’s identity to national and international audiences.
