Morelia launches 'Comunidad Naranja' app to improve women's safety

The municipal government of Morelia, Michoacán, led by Mayor Alfonso Martínez Alcázar, has introduced a free smartphone application called Comunidad Naranja, available for iOS and Android. Developed by the city's women’s equality secretariat (Semmujeris) under Nuria Gabriela Hernández Abarca, the app lets women request immediate assistance, file rapid reports, receive institutional guidance and locate more than 470 designated safe spaces known as Punto Naranja throughout the city.

Users such as resident Soyla Morales Madrigal say the tool allows them to seek help without travelling to the town hall: “A través de la tecnología me parece muy bien, una manera más eficiente y más rápida; no tenemos tiempo de ir hasta el Ayuntamiento a presentar una denuncia.” The initiative aims to strengthen prevention and timely response to gender‑based violence and harassment in public spaces, public transport and streets.
