Mexico political landscape shifts ahead of 2027 elections
Various political figures and parties in Mexico are positioning themselves for the 2027 electoral cycle. In Michoacán, Morelia Mayor Alfonso Martínez Alcázar confirmed his aspiration to run for governor, noting he may step down from his current role as early as January 2027. Meanwhile, Gaby Molina emphasized the role of women in community organization during an assembly in Morelia.
In Quintana Roo, Estefanía Mercado led a large gathering in Playa del Carmen, calling for unity among Morena and its allies (PVEM and PT) to consolidate the ‘Fourth Transformation’. However, Marybel Villegas Canché warned she might leave Morena due to a perceived lack of transparency and gender parity in internal processes in Quintana Roo.
Other regional developments include Liborio Vidal Aguilar seeking support within Morena in Mérida, Yucatán, and Martín Camacho Figueroa campaigning for a leadership role in Salvador Alvarado, Sinaloa. In Baja California, the PAN party is seeing internal movement as Margarita Flores de Sánchez and Verónica Ruffo Sánchez emerge as potential gubernatorial candidates.
