Uruapan: Embalmed body abandoned in coffin near airport
In Uruapan, Michoacán, a man's embalmed body was abandoned in a coffin on a sidewalk near the Ignacio López Rayón International Airport. The incident occurred on a Tuesday afternoon, shortly before local Independence Day celebrations.
According to the Michoacán State Attorney General's Office and representatives from the involved funeral home, employees were allegedly coerced by individuals linked to organized crime to remove the casket from the facility and leave it in public. One worker reported receiving a call offering money to transport the coffin, only to be threatened by armed, hooded men once they arrived at the destination.
The victim, a man approximately 35 years old, showed apparent gunshot wounds to the head and chest. Authorities initially treated the scene as a potential trap, deploying explosive ordnance disposal teams, but later confirmed no explosives were present. The body has been moved to the Uruapan Medical Forensics Service (SEMEFO) for identification and autopsy. The investigation into the circumstances of the death and the identity of the perpetrators is ongoing.
