Mexico reports significant drop in homicides amid regional crime enforcement

Mexico is seeing varied trends in public security and crime. National data from the Secretariado Ejecutivo del Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública (SESNSP) indicates a 30.1% reduction in intentional homicides during the first half of 2026 compared to 2025. In the State of Mexico, homicides fell by 25.8% in the same period. However, the State of Mexico also reported its highest number of property crime reports in July 2026, with 11,554 cases.

In recent enforcement actions, authorities in Uruapan, Michoacán, detained five individuals for possession of marijuana and 42 cannabis-based edible products. In Cuautla, Morelos, four men were arrested following the discovery of human remains. Meanwhile, in Chihuahua, armed individuals stole two official vehicles from a state government lot in Altavista.

On the international stage, Omar García Harfuch, head of the SSPC, addressed the International Conference for Drug Control (IDEC) in Argentina. He emphasized that transnational criminal organizations operate without borders, necessitating improved bilateral intelligence sharing. He also highlighted a 51% drop in homicides and the seizure of 518 tons of drugs as part of the current administration's strategy.
