Claudia Sheinbaum links PRI violence to party decline

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has attributed recent physical and verbal aggression by members of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) to the party’s internal decline and personal frustration. During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum linked these outbursts to the PRI’s diminishing electoral support, stating, “It is a personal frustration that manifests in blows.”

Sheinbaum connected the current behavior of PRI leadership, specifically national leader Alejandro ‘Alito’ Moreno Cárdenas, to a historical pattern of political violence. She recounted a personal anecdote from her time as a student at UNAM, describing how university-linked ‘porros’ (political thugs) associated with the PRI attacked her brother. She argued that the party’s current tactics reflect this historical origin.

The President’s comments follow recent tensions involving PRI members at the Senate and the National Electoral Institute (INE), where confrontations occurred following institutional reminders of regulations. Sheinbaum called for rationality and dialogue, urging political actors to avoid provocations and resolve differences through institutional channels.
