Morelos teachers strike over 60 million peso debt
Teachers and administrative staff from technical high schools in Morelos, Mexico, have initiated an indefinite strike due to unpaid benefits totaling more than 60 million pesos. The debt, which has accumulated over three years, includes seniority bonuses, specific compensations, and other economic entitlements owed by federal authorities.
The strike affects approximately 3,000 workers across 25 campuses, including CBTIS, CETIS, and CBTA institutions. This labor action is expected to disrupt the school cycle for roughly 20,000 students.
Joel Sánchez Vélez, general secretary of Section 19 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), stated that current negotiation proposals have not met the minimum requirements of the workers. Consequently, union leaders are planning to expand their protests from Morelos to Mexico City, targeting the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) to demand a definitive solution to their contractual demands.
