Morelos teachers strike over 60 million peso debt
Teachers in Morelos, Mexico, have initiated an indefinite strike across 25 campuses belonging to the General Directorate of Industrial Technological Education (DGETI) and the General Directorate of Agricultural Technological Education and Sea Sciences (DGETAyCM). The protest is driven by a significant federal debt regarding labor benefits, totaling approximately 60 million pesos.
According to Joel Sánchez Vélez, general secretary of Section 19 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), the debt includes retirement and seniority bonuses, with some workers reporting unpaid benefits dating back to 2020. The union is also demanding transparency regarding worker promotion processes. While a national working group has been established, no concrete solution has been reached. Union leaders have warned that if the issue is not addressed immediately, they may expand their demonstrations to Mexico City.
