Jasmine Bugarín begins U.S. citizenship renunciation process

Jasmine Bugarín Rodríguez, a political figure and potential 2027 gubernatorial candidate for Nayarit, has officially begun the process of renouncing her United States citizenship. Bugarín, who was born in California to Mexican migrant parents, visited the U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara to initiate the legal procedure.

The move follows intense political scrutiny regarding her dual nationality. While Bugarín previously stated she had filed documents with the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs to renounce loyalty to foreign states, critics noted that formal renunciation of U.S. citizenship must be conducted through U.S. consular authorities.

Political allies from the Morena and PVEM parties have expressed their support, emphasizing that Bugarín is Mexican by birth under constitutional provisions. President Claudia Sheinbaum has also addressed the controversy, noting that while current constitutional reforms requiring exclusive Mexican nationality for governors will not take effect until 2028, the issue remains a matter of political consistency and sovereignty.
