Morena appoints Elí César Cervantes in San Luis Potosí amid political tension
The Morena party has acknowledged a lack of sufficiently developed local profiles in San Luis Potosí to lead its project for the 2027 elections. Following a telephone recognition survey of internal candidates, party leadership opted for consensus to appoint Elí César Cervantes as the state coordinator for the Defense of Transformation and National Sovereignty.
Cervantes, a former senator (2018–2024) and former official at the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation, was selected due to his history within the founding movement.
This appointment highlights growing political tensions in San Luis Potosí. While the ruling alliance between Morena and the Green Party has functioned in the past, fractures are appearing regarding the 2027 gubernatorial succession. Governor Ricardo Gallardo Juárez is reportedly seeking to maintain territorial control through the Green Party, promoting Senator Ruth González Silva as a successor. In response, Morena has distanced itself from the Governor's preferred candidate, signaling a shift in the state's political landscape.
