Mexico proposes constitutional reform to ban dual nationality for executive candidates
President Claudia Sheinbaum is advocating for a constitutional reform in Mexico that would prohibit individuals holding dual nationality from seeking the presidency or other executive offices. The proposed measure aims to ensure absolute loyalty to the Mexican state and prevent potential international interference or conflicts of interest for the nation's highest leadership.
Under the reform, candidates for the presidency, governorships, and heads of government would be required to renounce any foreign citizenship before registering their candidacy. Additionally, once in office, holders of executive positions would be prohibited from acquiring or invoking a foreign nationality during their term.
Legislative leaders, including Senate President Higinio Martínez, expect the reform to move through a fast-track process. The goal is to have the initiative approved by the Chamber of Deputies and subsequently voted on by the Senate within the month of September.
