Morena marks 15 years of political activity in Mexico
The Mexican political party Morena is commemorating its 15th anniversary of existence, marking its evolution from a social movement founded by Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2011 to a dominant national political force. Celebrations and commemorative marches have taken place in various regions, including Zacatlán, Nuevo Laredo, and the State of Mexico.
Amid these celebrations, the party faces internal challenges and strategic shifts as it prepares for the 2027 elections, where 17 governorships are at stake. National leader Ariadna Montiel has emphasized the movement’s roots in popular organization and its commitment to the ‘Fourth Transformation’ under President Claudia Sheinbaum.
However, the party is also navigating internal tensions regarding candidate selection and territorial control. Reports indicate potential restructuring within state leaderships, such as in Tlaxcala, and debates over the pragmatic selection of candidates to ensure electoral victories. Some internal critics have raised concerns regarding the selection of certain profiles and the party's alliances with other political groups, such as the Green Party, as it seeks to maintain its political supremacy.
